Charcoal Drawing Techniques

Charcoal is one of the oldest drawing techniques. It is nothing more than a mixture of carbon pressed together with lithium and a binder. In the artistic world, it comes in two forms: cylindrical or cubic nuggets and a charcoal pencil that needs to be sharpened. The charcoal leaves behind a very sharp black mark, the thickness of which depends on the size of the bar.

Working in this technique doesn't allow you to dive into the details, but it works very well in landscapes, gives the artist a lot of freedom and a nice flowing effect. It is often rubbed into works by draftsmen - it can be rubbed with a finger, a rubber band, a hanger or even a piece of cloth, giving the design a tonal character. Working with charcoal drawing requires a little experience, since traces of it are not easy to remove.

Ink Drawing Techniques

Ink is a form of water-soluble paint that contains pigment. It's made of soot - hence its deep black color. It dries fairly quickly and is applied over work with pen or brush. With the use of fine tools, it allows you to create precise works with small details. It gives nice effects, but is quite demanding - there is no question of removing it from the support to correct errors.

Pastel Drawing Techniques

One of the most popular artistic techniques in the world. He uses colored pigments in various forms. It is said that pastels create an effect between drawing and painting. The backing can be linen, paper or parchment. Due to the low durability (pastels do not penetrate the support), it is necessary to use a fixative to fix the work.

Drawing with pastels produces beautiful soft effects with a luminous finish. The pastels come in the form of "rolls" of different nature. Soft - dry, hard, in pencils, oil, water, chalk or wax - each of them has a different mixture of substances that change their characteristics.

Colored pencil drawing techniques

The most popular pencils are colored pencils. Graphite, available in many different colors, is enclosed in a frame - usually wooden. Pencils require regular sharpening and their mark cannot be completely removed.

There are also watercolor, pastel and candle pencils. The great advantage of all is the richness of the colors which, together with the white pencil, which allows shading and lightening of the colors, gives great artistic freedom.

Sanguine Drawing Techniques

A very characteristic red-brown pencil, which owes its unique color to metallic oxides. For artists, it is usually available as a pencil, that is, sanguine in the form of graphite, enclosed in a wooden case for sharpening. The support can be paper.

Sanguine has an original brown color and allows you to create precise details. It can be ground to some extent, but to a much lesser extent than, for example, coal. It cannot be completely removed, so care must be taken.

Felt-tip pen drawing techniques

Also called a marker, it comes in the form of a pen with a plastic casing with an absorbent core impregnated with a specific ink color. The marker backing can be paper or fabric. The line drawn with a marker can be thin, thicker or very thick - it all depends on the thickness of the insert and its shape (it can be pointed, round or cut).

The leader line thickness starts at 0.8 mm and ends at approximately 4 mm. Marker ink is absolutely impossible to remove. In the case of artistic works with a marker, it is also not possible to rub.

Chalk Drawing Techniques

The drawing chalk is made of calcium carbonate. It is most often seen in the form of cylindrical sticks, but there is also chalk in the frame. Due to its "dust" nature, it penetrates poorly into the substrate, so the support must be porous (rough).

The nature of chalk drawing is quite similar to that of charcoal. It mixes perfectly, allows for a fantastic consistency and a great end result. However, it is difficult to achieve precise detail, it cannot be completely removed, while its disadvantages are compensated by the richness of colors.
